Going on a backpacking trip is significantly different than going on a normal Troop 804 (drive & drop) style camping trip. Backpacking requires different gear, preparation and organization.
CARRY IT ALL ON YOUR BACK
The biggest challenge of preparing for a backpacking trip is knowing that everything we need for the entire weekend must be carried on our backs. This includes our shelter (a tent), bedding (sleeping bag and pad), clothes, food for all meals, cooking gear (stove, utensils, cups, and pots), water for both drinking and cooking, and even all the garbage we create during the trip.
While daunting, the preparation and challenge of backpacking are incredibly worthwhile and satisfying for us as scouts. The effort we put into preparation helps us become super organized and detail-oriented. It refines our gear choices and tests our abilities as outdoorsmen. The process of getting ready and participating in the trip elevates our skills and boosts our confidence to handle anything life throws at us. Plus, it's incredibly fun to hike into the backcountry and set up a tent in a beautiful place few have ever seen.
